In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, we are looking for a PhD candidate.

The Fryske Akademy and the University of Amsterdam offer one PhD position for four years in the field of the Frisian language and culture. If you are looking for an interesting workplace where you can conduct independent research and where interest in the Frisian language is linked to contemporary research at one of Europe's top universities in the field of Linguistics, we offer a unique opportunity. The collaboration between Fryske Akademy and University of Amsterdam gives you access to a strong, international research environment as well as specialist knowledge about Fryslân and the Frisian language.

In four years you will write a thesis on the theme 'Tense, Mood and Aspect in the Verbal Morphology of Old Frisian'. This research is part of the project 'The Roots of Old West Frisian' and will also contribute to the development of the Frisian Language Database. To carry out the research project, we are looking for candidates with a background in or clear affinity with linguistics, especially morphology and syntax and with an eye for historical/diachronic aspects. A demonstrable affinity with the Frisian language and/or study of Frisian is recommended.

Requirements

  • A master's degree with excellent grades in a relevant field.
  • Required language skills: English (the dominant language of publications) and the willingness to develop language skills in Frisian and Dutch for daily communication on the workfloor; passive knowledge of German is necessary for the study of the older specialist literature.
  • Excellent academic writing and oral skills.
  • Good social and organizational skills.
  • Great interest in a scientific career.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Appointment

You will be appointed for a period of 4 years. Initially, a contract of 1 year is offered, with an extension for the following years on the basis of an evaluation of, among other things, a written research output. We offer a full-time PhD position (38 hours per week) for 4 years, preferably starting as soon as possible.
The salary, with a full appointment, is € 2,872 in the first year, P scale 0 gross per month, rising to € 3,670 in the last year. Favorable employment conditions include: holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus, according to the Collective Labor Agreement of Dutch Universities. We offer a wide package of fringe benefits.
