Job description

The Amsterdam UMC Fellowship offers the opportunity for two outstanding, internationally recognized, postdoctoral researchers to further develop their own research lines and to set up their own research groups within Amsterdam UMC. The candidate must have the potential to advance to full professor within ten years.

As Amsterdam UMC aims to promote diversity in our organization, at least one of the two selected Fellows will be representing an underrepresented background.

To apply, you will be asked to upload three documents:
  1. The application form that can be downloaded from Amsterdam UMC Fellowship. This form should include a description of the proposed research that the applicant intends to conduct at Amsterdam UMC.
  2. A letter of support from the head of the receiving department at Amsterdam UMC is requested. This letter should also describe the departments career policy, support and mentoring. In case of an internal candidate the letter should also describe the current position and embedment of the candidate in the department as well as prospected changes in the next five years.
  3. The head of the department and/or the candidate should inform the research institute director of the fellowship application. A letter of the director may be added to the documents.

Requirements

  • Researchers are eligible if they received a PhD degree less than six years ago. We adhere to the NWO Extension clause.
  • Researchers with a contract at Amsterdam UMC Research BV or a temporary contract with Amsterdam UMC are eligible.
  • Prestigious personal grant laureate at midcareer level. For example a (nearly) successful completion of a prestigious personal grant at junior postdoc level or preparing for a proposal for VIDI, ERC Starting grant or an equivalent.
  • Proven academic track record (e.g. publications, invited speaker, etc.).
  • Alignment with the research strategy of Amsterdam UMC.
  • Alignment of their research topic with one, or max. two of the eight research institutes of Amsterdam UMC Research institutes.
  • Experience in research management.
  • Demonstrable affinity with education.
  • Experience abroad is a plus.
  • There is no preference for an internal or external candidate.
  • The fellowship has to be used on another project than other obtained grants.
  • The candidate has the qualifications to develop towards an associate professorship after 5 years.
  • A complete PURE profile if the candidate works at Amsterdam UMC.

Conditions of employment

  • The Amsterdam UMC Fellowship consists of maximum €750.000 for a maximum of five years. The award can be spent a.o. on salary of the applicant, a PhD student and/or bench fee. It spans a four-five-year period with an interim evaluation after two years. The Fellowship includes a tenure track with the possibility to acquire a tenured position after 4-5 years. Amsterdam UMC offers a stimulating 4-5-year career and personal development trajectory in a challenging research environment.
  • One-year contract with the prospect of a permanent contract.
  • Classification in salary scale 11, 12: € 4.678 to € 7.232 gross for full-time employment (depending on education and experience).
  • In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus and 8% holiday allowance. Calculate your net salary here.

  • Pension accrual with the ABP, of which we pay 70% of the premium.
  • For >7 km each way, 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs and, for private transport, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km each way.
  • Do you prefer walking or cycling? Take advantage of our good bike scheme. Moreover, you will receive a reimbursement of €0.18 per km.
  • An active staff association and Jong Amsterdam UMC association, both of which organize fun (sports) activities and events.
