Job description

The Informatics Institute (IvI) is seeking a tenure track assistant professor focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence and data engineering. The successful candidate will have a background in database systems, natural language processing, information science or artificial intelligence. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to): automated knowledge base construction, information integration, semi-structured/semantic data management, and machine learning for data management.

You will be joining the newly formed INtelligent Data Engineering Lab (INDE Lab) - indelab.org. The lab's broad aim is to tackle problems relating to the preparation, management, integration and reuse of data using empirical insights into data science practice. The lab is situated within Amsterdam’s larger data science and artificial intelligence ecosystem (e.g. amsterdamdatascience.nl, icai.ai) and values practice-informed and interdisciplinary research and outreach.

We strongly encourage applications coming from a unique perspective. Tell us how your background fits with the aims of the lab even if your profile is slightly different from the profile / requirements written below.

The new assistant professor is expected to contribute not only to the development of the research lab through world class research but also to the IvI's education program. The program includes bachelor's and masters’ programs in information science, data science and artificial intelligence. Teaching will be approximately 30% of the total allocated time for the function (38 hours per week).

Additionally, you will be expected to acquire your own funding from sources such as the national funding agency NWO, EU funding via H2020 and industry. Finally, contributions to outreach, both in terms of engaging with the media as well as applying the state of the art research tools to applications in society are valued. UvA spinoffs that bring technology to industry and society are highly encouraged.

Department

Informatics Institute

The mission of the Informatics Institute is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research in Computer Science. Our research involves complex information systems at large, with a focus on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems, all with a strong interactive component.

We prefer to select specific topics and pursue them from methods in informatics and engineering, rather than make a choice for fundamental versus engineering science. As part of our research mission, we maintain strategic multi-disciplinary research links inside and outside the University of Amsterdam.
