Full Professor Applied Economic Data Research Methods

We are looking for an expert and colleague in Applied Economic Data Research Methods, with experience in working with large, complex economic data from a variety of sources.

Your job
As Applied Economic Data Research Methods chair, you play a crucial role in strengthening the research profile and expertise of the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) and its Applied Economics section, both nationally and internationally, with cutting-edge data analysis techniques to solve real-world economic problems in research and education. This is in line with important societal challenges, the U.S.E. research themes Future of Work and Sustainability & Economic Development, and in cooperation with relevant Utrecht University strategic themes, in particular Pathways to Sustainability and Institutions for Open Societies.

Your main goal is to further advance and profile economic research and education according to the field of expertise in line with the importance of the chair. Apart from your own research, you will play a stimulating role in U.S.E. research, to promote a research environment according to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, and to engage in activities aimed at attracting external research funding through grants and consulting. Additional duties include supervision of PhD projects and Postdoctoral research resulting in theses and publications and the transfer of knowledge to society by organising events, such as conferences and workshops. Teaching will be multidisciplinary and applied in nature according to the USE educational profile. Cooperation with other chair groups within U.S.E. and Utrecht University in teaching and research is strongly encouraged. Your tasks and responsibilities include:

• performing and encouraging scientific research in the field of Applied Economic Data Research Methods;
• supervision of PhD theses;
• contributing to a suitable educational- and research environment to create team spirit and societal impact, including stimulating and supervising multidisciplinary research;
• contributing to financial sustainability, including active participation in external funding;
• organising and teaching in education in the U.S.E. Bachelor's and Master's programmes.

You are a passionate and creative academic with a strong background in economics and a genuine interest in Applied Economic Data Research Methods. The ideal candidate for this position has strong research skills and an openness to collaborating with researchers from other disciplines. This involves an inquisitive mindset and a willingness to explore and experiment with new research methods and approaches in both research and academic teaching. You have a solid publication track record, ideally reflecting the ability to work within multidisciplinary research teams on topics related to the position. Teaching experience in Applied Economic Data Research Methods is also expected. Additionally, you are able to effectively communicate complex scientific results and insights to a wider audience, including policymakers, societal stakeholders, and the general public. Proven success in this area would be an advantage.

Besides that, you have the following qualifications:

• a doctorate in the field of economics or business;
• a strong track record in research as demonstrated among others by publications in nationally and internationally recognised journals;
• research interests in and (proven) experience with data generation in multidisciplinary settings;
• proven experience as leader of an educational group or research group;
• willingness to put effort into the further development of teaching and research in Applied Economic Data Research Methods from a multidisciplinary perspective within Utrecht University;
• a record of achievement in undergraduate and graduate teaching and administration;
• proven ability to acquire external funding;
• good communicative skills;
• fluency in English. Sufficient knowledge of Dutch, possibly to be developed over time, is a plus in light of possible future Bachelor's programmes.

• An employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract;
• a working week of 32-40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €6,963 and €10,138 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale H2 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
• 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
• a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
