NIAS offers individual fellowships to scholars who wish to carry out advanced research in the humanities and the social sciences. For five or ten months, scholars are offered the time and space to work on a topic of their own choice, as member of an interdisciplinary community of scholars, journalists, artists and writers.
Applicants should have at least three years of experience since they obtained their PhD-degree and their project proposal should be related to the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. Applicants fill in an online application form providing personal information, information about work & career and practical matters. In the same form, applicants upload a full proposal for their research project of max 1500 words, which includes a description of the topic of your choice, its academic and societal relevance, and the added value of the interdisciplinary environment at NIAS.
A Fellowship includes time to fully focus on one's own project at an Institute for Advanced Study, a personal office in the center of Amsterdam and daily lunches. A NIAS fellowship does not constitute an employment relationship. During the fellowship, the fellow is and remains an employee of his or her own university or research institute. Fellows can apply for financial compensation to cover (part of) the costs to replace their teaching obligations. Teaching replacement grants can be up to €3,800 per month. NIAS offers accommodation on top locations against subsidized rates to fellows who live more than 1.5-hour’s journey from Amsterdam. Fellows who live less than 1.5-hours’ journey by public transport to Amsterdam Central receive travel expenses. Should corona measures prevent a fellowship at the institute, an online programme is offered.
The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study is one of the institutes of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). It is an intellectual haven to a diverse year-group of international scientists, writers, journalists and artists and provide these NIAS Fellows with the opportunity to devote themselves to an independent research project of their own design.
The Call for Applications is open until 12.00hrs, 15 March 2021. The review process and selection process takes time. All applicants will be informed of the outcome by 24 December 2021.
