University Lecturer Digital Humanities with focus on data-analysis and visualization

The Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities (LUCDH) is recruiting one university lecturer to join a team of researchers to develop innovative research projects that take full advantage of digital sources and methods, design and implement teaching programmes in Digital Humanities and to collaborate with digital humanities research across the university.

We are looking for someone with an area of specialisation in the development of data analysis and visualisation platforms (including database design, visualisation, network analysis, or geographic information systems).

Key responsibilities include.

• Teaching BA courses in the field of data visualization and new media
• Designing courses in Digital Humanities for students at all levels;
• Contributing to the strengthening of digital research methods in existing curricula across the faculty
• Advising on technical design and implementation of humanities research projects;
• Generating research funding and assisting in the development of digital humanities research proposals;
• Developing collaborative research projects with university, national, and international partners;
• Authoring and co-authoring DH research outputs.
• Coordinating DH activity across the Humanities Faculty and with other faculties and units such as the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science, the University Library, and the Data Science Centre;

• PhD in digital humanities or computer science or PhD in a humanities field with documented programming skills and experience;
• Demonstrable interest in and experience with (digital) humanities research;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Project management skills;
• Experience teaching or co-teaching;
• Experience with research funding applications or funded projects;
• Experience with and demonstrable research interest in data visualization;
• Experience with relational database design and use for textual and image data;
• Experience working with spatial data / GIS and map-based visualization;
• Experience with social network analysis methods and tools;
• Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not possess this qualification or its equivalent, the faculty will offer support in obtaining it.

The appointment will be for a period of two and a half year. The salary will between the gross minimum of €3,475 per month and gross maximum of €4,757 per month (pay scale 11) for a full working week in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience.

An appointment at Leiden University includes pension build-up and other benefits, including an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. Leiden University’s humanities faculty features an impressive number of scholars who are working on Digital Humanities projects, ranging from the analysis of large-scale text corpora, image databases, and historical sources to the culture and politics of contemporary social media. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Institutes in the Humanities Faculty (especially History and Arts and Society), the Leiden University Library, the Leiden Data Science Centre and the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science to develop research projects and teaching programmes.
